Hidden Freedoms

Climbing freedom's tree Erin felt the eyes of others upon him, stares he did not understand and ruled as unfair. Placing one foot before another he struggled onward feeling awkward amongst the others who moved with such ease doing tricks he would not dare. All the while he marveled at the beauty of their golden fur waving in the air. Ashamed for his caution and care he returned his focus again to his climb.

Ever alone in the presence of so many others Erin dared not stop. He loved those around him and held them in awe for the way they could jump from branch to branch and tree to tree swinging by their tails so comfortable and free. Erin continued slowly, wanting to know the same life of ease.

In his greatest time of fear Erin would hold on firmly with all that he had, even biting the tree to keep from falling. Though these actions he felt the others would find appalling, they looked on with a sympathetic respect that he did not understand.

Climbing diligently Erin found himself at the tree's top. It was here he did stop and he did cry, for now he was alone with nowhere to go, nothing left to try. Sitting in this place feeling there to be no more dreams left to chase Erin huddled against the breeze.

Days and nights had passed when at last he gave himself one final, seemingly pointless, task. Erin would reach for the sky to grasp what could not be touched. Moving to the top of the highest branch he stretched and he reached. To Erin's surprise a breeze came and lifted him from the tree. He rose and glided at that moment knowing what it was like to be free.

For Erin is a bird you see.
