Reaching - Prose
"Reaching" is one of my all time favorite poems. Like most people my past has its dark places and my early poetry reflected that aspect of my life. My journey into the world of poetry started with the question, "if these were to be my last words to this world what would they be?" I had not intended the answer to be a poem. A poem however is what I got. I liked what I read and continued to ask myself the same question and always wrote warnings to the world or words to express a deeply felt sorrow. "Reaching" was a different poem.
I grew tired of writing in the dark, but felt that a jump into writing light hearted phrases was too much and would seem phony as my heart was not yet there. "Reaching" is the result. It is a transitional poem. It is one of those poems that I wrote to make the journey into the light. It starts in a dark image representing birth into undesireable circumstances and the growth beyond them. These circumstances even nurture the growing process until there is a finish with great hope and vision of the future yet to come.
It is the transition I value. To report a mesage of hope without first having traveled the road to find it is to mearly convey an empty wish.
